Construction software

Which construction software is free and who is it suitable for?

You are looking for a free app for your construction company. One supplier offers a free viewer, another gives you a two-week trial and a third only lets you participate for free in a client's projects. Those are three different offers. The right choice starts with the work you want to organise and your role in it.

Direct answer

Small contractors can use free tools for individual tasks: Dalux BIM Viewer for viewing models, Dalux Field Basic for snagging items and Trello Free for simple task management. LibreOffice offers free office software. Woub offers free participation in projects you have been invited to, alongside paid management subscriptions and a 14-day trial. Choose according to usage rights, required features, participants and handover. None of these free routes automatically covers every construction company process.

Which construction software is genuinely free, and which only offers a trial?

First distinguish between a free product or plan, free participation and a temporary trial period. A free viewer can support daily work without you taking out the paid management package. A trial period gives you time to assess a paid product. Participating free in someone else's project does not automatically give you the right to manage the same projects and business settings yourself.

The selection below was checked on 22 October 2026. These are different types of tools, rather than a ranking of interchangeable construction packages.

Dalux BIM Viewer: free viewing and model comments

Dalux BIM Viewer supports viewing models and drawings on desktop and mobile. Model-based comments are also part of the described offer. That may fit if you mainly want to understand and discuss information supplied. A viewer is different from software for designing the original BIM model.

Woub may also be useful for a phone conversation about the availability of a chosen element, for example, and the resulting actions. The model comment and technical assessment remain in the chosen BIM approach. If all necessary coordination already works well there, do not add a second channel for the same discussion.

Dalux Field Basic: free tasks and snagging items on drawings

Dalux Field Basic is offered as a free product for tasks and snagging items with drawings and BIM. You can record tasks with photos and assign them to someone responsible with a deadline. According to the supplier, you can also work without a 3D model, using 2D drawings. For more extensive functions, such as an inspection plan, Dalux points to paid versions.

Do not therefore treat this offer as only a viewer. An extra Woub task for every existing snagging item would mainly create duplicate recording. Woub can keep additional conversations with supplier and subcontractor together: what is the cause, which material is missing and who confirms the remedial arrangement? The person responsible then updates the snagging item's status in Dalux.

Trello Free: a free task board with specific limits

Trello Free offers cards, people responsible and due dates, among other things. On the check date, the free version is limited to ten collaborators and ten boards per workspace, with a maximum of 10 MB per file. It is general task management software, rather than a specialist construction package.

A simple board may be enough for a small team. Do count the people who need to collaborate: according to Trello's explanation of the participant limit, guests and outstanding invitations count too. If the problem mainly arises in phone conversations, an extra board alone does not automatically help. Woub can record that conversation within the project and organise recognised follow-up actions. Choose where those actions are primarily followed up; do not maintain the same action list in both apps.

LibreOffice: free documents and spreadsheets

LibreOffice is free open source office software, including the Writer word processor and Calc spreadsheet program. It may be useful for your own quantities list, simple comparison or working document. You remain responsible for a spreadsheet's setup and checks.

A spreadsheet does not automatically record what the site manager agrees with the supplier by phone. Use Woub where needed for that coordination and follow-up actions while the person responsible processes the confirmed change in the right file or specialist package. The Document Foundation itself does not offer technical support; professional support and services are separate choices.

Woub: collaborating free is different from managing free

De Woub pricing page distinguishes free participation for invited external parties from paid administrator subscriptions. As a subcontractor, you may therefore have a different role from the construction project coordinator creating projects on behalf of their business. The knowledge base on external invitations describes adding a subcontractor or client to a chat.

If you want to organise projects yourself, assess the appropriate administrator subscription. Woub offers a 14-day trial for this. That trial does not make paid management permanently free. When choosing, record which roles, users and functions you need after the trial.

Remember: free does not always mean suitable for business use

A free download is not automatically a business-use licence. SketchUp explicitly states that SketchUp Free is not for commercial use. It therefore does not belong in this selection as a free business solution for a contractor. Check this boundary with other free design and estimating tools too before using them for jobs.

What are the limits of free tools for construction teams?

The limit is not just the number of users or files. It concerns whether you can handle a full work situation: share information, assess a change, reach someone responsible and find the outcome. Some free products support extensive collaboration; others suit one clearly defined task.

Check at least four points:

  • Participants and permissions: can the tradesperson or subcontractor join with the access they need? Who manages the project when its original creator is absent?

  • Information: does a real drawing or photo series fit the limits, and can the crew find the right version?

  • Daily use: does the chosen route work on the devices and connections available on your sites? Also test a situation with poor reception.

  • Handover and departure: can you take relevant information with you in a usable form, and what happens to access and files after a trial, downgrade or switch?

A free package need not become inadequate as soon as you grow. Dalux, for example, also offers collaboration in its free products. Conversely, a small business may reach the participant limit of a general task plan. Assess project requirements; employee numbers alone say too little.

Test one changed delivery from start to finish

An illustrative example: during a refurbishment, a window frame becomes available later. The site manager reports the deviation, the construction project coordinator seeks a solution with the supplier, and the carpenter needs to know when they can start.

Have every candidate go through the same trial. Can the site manager share the right drawing and a photo? Does delivery confirmation reach the construction project coordinator? Has the carpenter found the new agreement? And can a colleague take over the project without reconstructing the original phone calls?

Note where you still need WhatsApp, email or a separate spreadsheet. That is not automatically a reason to reject the free product: a spreadsheet can remain a spreadsheet. It does become a problem if the confirmed working agreement cannot be clearly found anywhere.

When is Woub sufficient for a small construction company?

Woub can support daily project communication and task follow-up at a small construction company when agreements currently become scattered across WhatsApp, email, phone calls and separate notes. It does not replace ERP, BIM, estimating, DMS or specialist scheduling. A complete software choice therefore remains broader than Woub alone.

Use the project chat to discuss the delayed delivery, share a photo and turn a message into a task, for example. The task ‘confirm delivery date’ is different from calculating the construction programme or changing an order in ERP. The person responsible processes those implications in the existing package.

At calling from within the project, Wouby AI provides transcription and a summary within supported communication and can automatically turn recognised commitments into tasks. A recorded site meeting is processed into a transcript, summary and action items. Check the outcome: a possible delivery mentioned is not yet a confirmed date. Only include these functions in your comparison if they are available in the chosen setup.

The pricing page lists five included users with an administrator licence. First establish who needs to manage projects, who collaborates as a user and who is invited as an external participant. Check the subscription, billing period and any additional functions on the current pricing page. Do not turn free external participation into a calculation where every business role is free.

What Den Haan shows about implementation

Bestaand casebeeld van Den Haan Schilders en Bouw: Thomas aan zijn bureau, met een Woub-projectoverzicht op het scherm.

In the public Den Haan case, construction project coordinator Thomas describes preparation notes not always travelling with tradespeople. Information also passed through different communication channels. When introducing Woub, he sat down with employees individually to show the approach on computer and phone.

The lesson for software selection: include explanation and getting used to it. A free licence does not automatically change how the crew works. The case proves no general payback period and is not a test of a free Woub administrator plan.

Start with one project and one clear problem. Use Woub there for daily project communication instead of the separate WhatsApp group and any standalone task app; also reduce project email about short questions and actions. If those involved already collaborate well in their existing application, no extra app is needed for the same process.

What hidden costs are there?

Alongside the licence price, you spend time on setup, explanation, management and handovers. Those activities exist with both free and paid software. Name them beforehand so that a low-cost solution does not appear more expensive than expected when the team starts using it.

Also consider paid extensions, support and switching costs. Trello states that some additional Power-Ups may require a separate subscription, for example. A free basic plan therefore does not mean every desired extension is free.

Compare over the same period:

Licences and extensions + setup and guidance + recurring manual work + switching costs.

A simple calculation example, rather than a customer result: if two employees each spend ten minutes per working day re-entering or searching for project information, over twenty working days that totals 400 minutes, or 6 hours and 40 minutes. Measure whether that manual work is actually caused by the chosen setup. Do not automatically count it as a saving a paid package will deliver.

When should you choose each route?

Stay with a free solution when it supports the required task well, business use fits the conditions and handover remains workable. A free model viewer does not need replacing because you use paid software elsewhere.

Test a paid package when a missing function, management need or recurring communication problem obstructs work. Use the trial to assess that specific problem and establish which costs and conditions apply afterwards before it ends.

Add nothing yet when the existing approach works well enough or the problem mainly concerns an unclear agreement on who maintains something. Software does not automatically solve that division of responsibilities. For the broader choice, read which construction software suits your business.

Start small. Enjoy the peace of mind. Expand only then.

Try Woub free for 14 days if you specifically want to test the handover from conversations to project actions. Keep your existing specialist software as the primary reference and assess after the trial whether Woub offers enough added value.

Frequently asked questions

Is Woub completely free for a small construction company?

Woub distinguishes free participation as an invited external user, paid management subscriptions and a 14-day trial. A small company does not automatically receive free management access because it has few employees. Determine which roles and features you need and check the current conditions.

Can you use Dalux for free without a 3D model?

According to the supplier, Dalux Field Basic also supports 2D drawings without a 3D model. Assess whether the free features suit the items you want to capture and follow up. More extensive processes may require another version.

Do you need to replace a free tool as your company grows?

Not automatically. Reassess participants, permissions, available features and handover. A free application can continue supporting a defined task within a larger company. Switch if a specific limitation obstructs the work.
